Summary

A fun book to read while with covid。 Best about it the language。 In Italian it is heavily inflected with Sicilian dialect which I wonder how it is translated in the English version。。。 probably not present l guess unless they use a bit of southern slang。 Well that was the best part and sorry if not transpiring otherwise。 Not particularly fond of mystery novels figuring out words meaning by their sound was more difficult than figuring out who the murderer was, which was obvious to me from the star A fun book to read while with covid。 Best about it the language。 In Italian it is heavily inflected with Sicilian dialect which I wonder how it is translated in the English version。。。 probably not present l guess unless they use a bit of southern slang。 Well that was the best part and sorry if not transpiring otherwise。 Not particularly fond of mystery novels figuring out words meaning by their sound was more difficult than figuring out who the murderer was, which was obvious to me from the start 。。 still a fun read。 。。。more

Fun, fast-paced and lots of humorous dialogue! Not your serious investigative mystery, for sure。 Inspector Montalbano is quite the character, always hungry and always in trouble。 This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I plan to read more。 It was a much appreciated diversion from the heavy and serious books I’ve been reading。 Also, gives you a “taste” of Sicily, it’s people, culture and food !

It was still good but there were more minor characters to keep up with than usual and the investigation was not as well developed as other Montalbano mysteries。

This was one of the Montalbano treasures I had missed, so I corrected that error with a satisfying read。 It opens with: "Whatever happened to those early mornings when, upon awakening, for no reason, he would feel a sort of current of pure happiness running through him?"We soon learn the latest case he is mulling over involves identifying a female corpse with a distinctive tattoo (the wings of the sphinx)。 The inspector and Livia have had a break, but he is not without female company。 This was one of the Montalbano treasures I had missed, so I corrected that error with a satisfying read。 It opens with: "Whatever happened to those early mornings when, upon awakening, for no reason, he would feel a sort of current of pure happiness running through him?"We soon learn the latest case he is mulling over involves identifying a female corpse with a distinctive tattoo (the wings of the sphinx)。 The inspector and Livia have had a break, but he is not without female company。 。。。more

Another Montalbano adventure。。。and a fairly good one!Age seems to be popping up more often。。。maybe AC is writing himself into his character。This one is a mystery involving illegals。。。sponsored by the Church。。。an untouchable and powerful force in Sicily。 Our man bucks the bureaucracy, thereby pissing off his boss and his boss's bosses。。。but gets his man/men。。。no spoiler here!As always, entertaining。。。just right for several short walks or a medium car trip。Recommended Another Montalbano adventure。。。and a fairly good one!Age seems to be popping up more often。。。maybe AC is writing himself into his character。This one is a mystery involving illegals。。。sponsored by the Church。。。an untouchable and powerful force in Sicily。 Our man bucks the bureaucracy, thereby pissing off his boss and his boss's bosses。。。but gets his man/men。。。no spoiler here!As always, entertaining。。。just right for several short walks or a medium car trip。Recommended 。。。more

Montalbano is his grumpy self, he and Livia are having another of their rough patches, and the case is one he should probably avoid but jumps into feet first。 Meanwhile, he smokes, he waxes poetic over food, and he ponders his mortality。 Another great entry in the series!

I needed a comfortable entertaining book to listen to while doing some major housework this weekend and Montalbano delivered。 Like always I preferred less Livia, but was ok with her reappearance at the end。

The books in the middle of this series are far below the standards of the first ones。 Montalbano is manifesting continuing clinically serious mental illness and incredibly bad behavior。 The resolution of the crimes he encounters is entirely dependent upon intuition (frequently presented in dreams and other fugue states) and intimidation。 The author, through her protagonist, seems to be comfortable with the paradigm that "the ends justify the means", to which we must say。。。never, under any circum The books in the middle of this series are far below the standards of the first ones。 Montalbano is manifesting continuing clinically serious mental illness and incredibly bad behavior。 The resolution of the crimes he encounters is entirely dependent upon intuition (frequently presented in dreams and other fugue states) and intimidation。 The author, through her protagonist, seems to be comfortable with the paradigm that "the ends justify the means", to which we must say。。。never, under any circumstances。 This is not the place to expound on philosophical discourse, but it would be welcome, if only on rare occasions, Montalbano could solve a case without operating outside the very law that he is bound to enforce。 His antics in setting up and badgering witnesses have become weary to say the least。 The humor associated with this behavior in earlier books no longer compensates。 And finally, his disdain for every individual/office above him in the chain of command, and his dependence upon the, shall we say, complete lack of any semblance of intelligence in the suspects he encounters, is hardly realistic。 Then, there is Lydia! 。。。more

Another Fan(atical) read。 I am really into these Camilleri/Montalbano books。 A young woman with a sphinx moth tattoo is found murdered。 Then, there are the young women with the tattoo who aren't dead。 And, the Benevolent Society that isn't。 If he were not already bald, Montalbano would be after all the twists and turns in this book。 But, oh, that Sicilian sun! #11 in Andrea Camilleri’s mystery novel series featuring Inspector Salvo Montalbano, and one of the darker ones, as Salvo is grumpy about his getting older, grumpy about Sicilian political corruption, and grumpy about his long-time relationship with Livia as it seems more than ever on the rocks。 This is a good book, but as I see it, it's standard fare for the series。 There’s great food lovingly described cooked at Enzo's Trattoria or by Salvo’s housekeeper Adelina。 And the amusing crime team ant #11 in Andrea Camilleri’s mystery novel series featuring Inspector Salvo Montalbano, and one of the darker ones, as Salvo is grumpy about his getting older, grumpy about Sicilian political corruption, and grumpy about his long-time relationship with Livia as it seems more than ever on the rocks。 This is a good book, but as I see it, it's standard fare for the series。 There’s great food lovingly described cooked at Enzo's Trattoria or by Salvo’s housekeeper Adelina。 And the amusing crime team antics continue as usual as a kind of counterpoint to the violence, which begins with the death of a woman who has emigrated from Russia with NOT a dragon tattoo, but a Sphinx moth tattoo。 And she’s not alone, as other women from Russia also have this tattoo (And the woman is of course as in most crime novels not only dead but beautiful and nude; can it be otherwise? I have a far-fetched theory about this that probably has been written about countless times)。 Not surprisingly, the women are all victims of sex trafficking in ways familiar to us now--promised a better life, taught to do "exotic" dancing, then turned to prostitution to pay back the men who house and feed them, and so on--the women, marked with the tattoos, came to Sicily rescued by an organization called Benevolence that turns out to be connected in shady, possibly corrupt ways to the mafia and maybe even the Roman Catholic Church。 Yes, Camilleri is so popular at this point in Sicily that he can even take on these two powerful organizations。 Don’t get me wrong, from my three-starring。 This book is good, just not surprising in any way, and it would be good if you want to raise attention to a world-wide scandal to have us get to know one of these women as a human being。 But although it’s a darker book with this sense of doom over Sicily and human trafficking and Livia, it's still good。 。。。more

I enjoyed the fast-paced mystery of this latest Montalbano installment, and the fact that Montalbano was investigating about 3 cases at once! Laughed half a dozen times too。。。 mainly because of Catarella being so prevalent in the scenes。 Oh man。 How he talks (and reading his misspelled words "poissonally in poisson") hurts my eyes, but it's still hilarious。 I enjoyed the fast-paced mystery of this latest Montalbano installment, and the fact that Montalbano was investigating about 3 cases at once!
